7 TRAITOR

Elektra woke up feeling refreshed the next morning and ready to restart the rebellion. She sat up with a smile. She would rally the team and get them out to conduct drills and exercises in the courtyard. They would rest, eat, and then talk strategies for recruiting.

She had every bit mapped out in her mind. She would recommend they split into teams and head in different directions to scout out others willing to join with them. She would set a date for them to stand together at the gates of Keldon’s compound. They would be ready to fight his soldiers and take back Denlerack.

She saw that KaLeah’s bed was empty and wondered how the girl had gotten up without waking her. She washed her face with the cold water sitting in the bathroom sink from the previous night and looked at herself for a moment in the chipped bathroom mirror.

Her brown skin looked darker in the dim lighting, and she tried to smooth down a few of her unruly curls.

Even though she’d given up the chance to live a comfortable life, she was finally feeling as if the decision was truly the right one. The people around her had already lost so much and now she hoped that she could help motivate them into fighting for their lives back.

She walked down to the main room with a bounce in her step. She was ready to exercise. There were a few kids already sitting downstairs and she clapped her hands together loudly.

“Alright, folks, let’s get back into shape. Where’s Colt?”

“Right here,” he said, coming in from another room. His voice was slightly rough with sleep, but she turned and saw that he was smiling.

An unvoluntary trickle of excitement at seeing him spread through her body. She smiled back at him.

“Ready?”

“I honestly haven’t been exercising lately, so thank you for kicking our butts. I’m ready. Come on, let’s get to the courtyard.”

Lina and Lainie came in from behind Colt, Felisha slowly came down the stairs with her arms crossed. Alister, Von, and Zuri got up from the couches, and Rustin bounded over from checking the camera screens.

“Everything is all-clear out there,” he said, beaming with his loving grin. “Where’s KaLeah?”

A shiver ran up Elektra’s spine. She looked around and shrugged, acting nonchalant and trying to ignore the strange feeling in her gut.

“I’m sure she’s around here somewhere,” she said. “Let’s go ahead and head out and she can join us later.”

“Oh, is this optional?” Felisha asked, shooting one eyebrow up high.

“No─” Elektra and Colt both said at the same time. Elektra’s cheeks burned. “She’s coming.”

“We all need to get into better shape, and you know it, Felisha,” Colt said. “We may have guns, but so do they. We are going to need to run and crawl and jump and maybe even fly if we are going to take this world back, and we need to be strong enough to do it. All of us. Now let’s go.”

Elektra felt some of her earlier gusto fading away.
